Pay-Per-Click advertising differs from search engine optimization in a couple of important ways. First of all, in PPC campaigns you pay for each person that clicks on your website from the search engine. In SEO campaigns you pay nothing per click. Secondly, PPC campaigns can get your website found immediately, while SEO campaigns can take 30 – 180 days before you see significant ranking changes.
Another key difference between SEO and PPC is where your site is found in the search results. PPC ads are found on the top of and the right-side of natural search results in Google and Yahoo (or on the bottom of the results). The PPC ads are shaded in a different color to highlight the fact they are paid ads rather than natural ads.
PPC campaigns, if highly targeted and well-managed, can increase your website traffic. It is important, however, that PPC not be used for long-term traffic goals. Your higher return on investment (ROI) will be through SEO efforts.
